Plastic Scrap
Mankind has invented all sorts of different substances to help him in this world. Amongst the most versatile of all is plastic. This manmade substance is durable, inexpensive and can be shaped into just about any form. But this durable material does not come without some heavy costs to the environment. The production of these materials can be quite toxic, as with PVC, and plastic scrap is hard to get rid off. While paper, cardboard and all sorts of other organic matter dissolve into the ground, plastic remains.
Even glass bottles eventually break and through the steady motion of wind and earth gets broken down back into the sand from which it came, but plastic can endure for centuries if not more. Plastic scrap can fill landfills for years to come while the other bits and pieces have long since disappeared into nothingness. Some plastics, like PVC, can also be quite toxic to the environment if and when they break down. But just because a piece of plastic is no longer serving a purpose does not mean that you should just throw it away. Plastic can easily be recycled again and again and again.
Aside from your local recycling center, there are companies who have taken it upon themselves to make the world a greener, cleaner place. They are more than willing to buy the plastic scraps that your business or home has so that they can recycle it into other useful things. They ensure that the landfills are not piled up high with various types of plastic and also create new items from the old plastic so that more, possibly toxic, processes do not have to occur to make more. Recycling plastic is not an easy task, however, and requires a lot of expertise and time to do it right.
Unlike newspapers, cardboard and other paper products that are simply pulped, cleaned and reused, plastic goes through a very tough process. There are many different types of plastic out there and two different types of plastic cannot be mixed. Many plastic scraps will have a little recycle symbol with a number somewhere on them. The numbers (usually a number between one and seven) are a code for the type of plastic that the particular piece is made of. Try to put the same numbers together before taking it to the plant or to the company that accepts plastic scraps. This will make their job much easier and ensure that the plastic can be recycled quickly and successfully.
Even though the planet is a big place, there is only so much space available. Do not let plastic scraps take up all the space. Take it to a recycling center or sell it to companies that want to buy our old plastic to help keep the planet clean. The future of the planet is in all our hands and even something as simple as recycling plastic can help to make our future a brighter, cleaner and greener one.
